For a long time, we thought the brain directed everything and the gut simply obeyed.

Today, we know that the relationship is bidirectional.

Your gut and your brain are in constant communication through what is known as the gut-brain axis. A complex network that connects the nervous system, immune system, hormones, and microbiota.

It's not a metaphor. It's biology.

What is the gut-brain axis?

It is the communication system that connects:

  • The central nervous system (brain)
  • The enteric nervous system (the gut's neural network)
  • The immune system
  • Hormonal signals
  • The gut microbiota

The vagus nerve acts as one of the main highways for this communication.

What happens in the gut can send signals to the brain.

And what happens in the brain can modify gut function.

Why is the gut called the "second brain"?

The gut contains millions of neurons that form the enteric nervous system.

Additionally:

And that's why gut balance can influence how the body manages certain stress responses.

What role does the microbiota play?

The microbiota is an active part of this axis.

Some of its functions include:

  • Participating in the production of metabolites that act as chemical messengers.
  • Interacting with immune system cells.
  • Influencing signals that reach the nervous system.

When the microbiota is in balance, it contributes to more efficient communication within the gut-brain axis.

When it loses diversity or balance, this communication can become less optimal.

It doesn't mean "everything is the microbiota."

It means it's part of the system.

Stress and gut function: a real relationship

Sustained stress can:

  • Alter gut motility.
  • Modify the composition of the microbiota.
  • Increase digestive sensitivity.

In turn, an altered gut can send signals that influence how the body perceives and manages stress.

It's a bidirectional cycle.
